Printshop Tour | Mirabo Press, Buffalo NY
Oh Buffalo, the city where you can purchase a 6,700sg/ft building and start a collaborative print studio! Yes we were visiting in the sunny springtime but I can’t say our tour around Mirabo’s Buffalo printshop wasn’t joined by feelings of longing for a space that size of our own.
Rachel Shelton, who runs Mirabo along with artists Bob Fleming, and Mizin Shin, showed me around their space and got me caught up on their activities since opening a few years ago. The ambition for Mirabo is to offer an environment for producing collaborative editioned prints by contract to individuals and galleries, expanding the local Buffalo art scene by working with both regional and national artists. In other words artists can self-fund the production of a new body of work that Mirabo’s team will offer the space and expertise to help them to realize.
In addition they have a terrific One-on-One program which is intended to give folks the chance to partner directly with an artist in a professional printmaking workshop on a project of their initiating. For artists who might have a print-based project without the technical abilities to realize it, this is such an incredible offering. They also have a public workshop program where newbie printers can get an introduction to different techniques as well as an exhibition program in their gallery space.
