Studio Visit in San Francisco with Henna Vainio

We began our collaboration artist Henna Vainio with a visit to her studio, located in the Minnesota Street projects building in San Francisco’s Dogpatch neighborhood.

We were eager to gain a deeper understanding of her process, materiality and begin our exploration of the form our printed collaboration could take. We had first encountered Henna’s tall, anthropomorphic sculptures at Art Los Angeles Contemporary where she was exhibiting with Josh Lilley Gallery and were drawn to how the lines of the cast corrugated cardboard created a repetitious, graphic element that responded all the curves and creases of Henna’s material manipulation.

In the studio we were able to see of how this casting process takes place as well as how she creates her gorgeous, saturated color palette through pigmenting the plaster - an element of the work we were definitely eager to emulate through our print series.
