Printshop Tour | Glasgow Print Studio
A few years back, I had the privilege of working out of the Glasgow Print Studio (GPS) for a couple of weeks. It was always such a thrill to see the names of fellow shop members written on their material storage boxes; Ciara Phillips…Nicolas Party. This is a space run by a team of absolute professionals eager to support the work of artists who want to take a similarly professional approach to their printed work. On a rainy afternoon during our most recent visit to Glasgow we were treated to the most wonderful tour from their Workshop Manager, Claire Forsyth.
While walking the shop and talking shop we connected with etcher and studio member, Rachel Duckhouse (whose commissioned iron gate design we would later see at the new Edinburgh Printmakers) who had recently returned from being this year’s International Artist in Resident at Megalo Print Studio, Canberra, Australia. We also looped in with master printer Alistair Gow who had eagerly returned from a stint at Crown Point Press and kitted GPS out with a brand new steel-facing tank and had the pleasure of discussing the finer points of “mis-printing-but-on-purpose” with master printer Scott Campbell who had recently exhibited an series of his own exquisite screenprinted monoprints in the GPS gallery space.
A familiar space to Graham and I was made to feel new as we heard of their new projects, got the backstory on past projects, and were energized by the enthusiasm each and every member of the team has for their own work and the work of their members. GPS is an enormously inspiring space and one we hope to continue visiting and stay connected to.
