Printshop Tour | Edition Copenhagen

Edition Copenhagen is a giant of the European print world not least because of their impressive output of exceptional lithographic editions. During our trip over the summer we met with one of their partners Dannie Vieten to see the shop and hear a little more about their unique working methods (Spoiler: they never print any proofs! Total rockstars!)

Founded in 1959, by Carl Urwald - father of current partner Rasmus Urwald - the vision for the studio is “to create a safe haven, where artists can work freely to continue developing the printing process and sustain the knowledge of lithography as a unique tool of artistic expression.” Rasmus is the studio’s Master Printer and now runs Edition Copenhagen alongside Dannie Vieten and Peter Wissing Sørensen.

Only one artist works in the workshop at a time - for roughly one week - and they’re supported by expert lithographers with the finest technical skills. Every artist who has come through the studio has their headshot added to the wall of fame (pictured below - quite the intimidating bunch!)

For the real print/paper nerds among us, the specific paper Edition Copenhagen uses for all of their editioning has been developed through a special collaboration with Velin d’Arches paper mill and their own watermark is actually embossed right in the paper during production along with the d’Arches’ brand watermark. So. cool.
